I will most likely be riding the jershey shoreline....either the belmar or Cape May area. I may be at OCMD once or twice this summer as well. I come from a bodyboarding background and i always wanted to surf so I figured why not....I wakeboard and snowboard, but I know it's a whole new world on a surfboard.

Most surf shops along the Ocean City boardwalk have a nice selection of used boards. Sometimes they will give you a package deal too if you buy a leash, wetsuit, ect...

almost all surf shops carry used boards for sale. Just stop in one and they'll help you. They'll tell you what board will suit you best for your size and everything

Those are the spots in OC, NJ. They usually have a pretty good supply.

I plan on renting a long board to learn then buying a used shorter board. Don't know where from yet though.

Have you tried ebay?

It seems like a local shop would be your best bet though, since they can help guide you

Edit: Oops, didnt realize Njsurfrgurl already said something about ebay

Surfing in NJ is pointless. 99% of the time it is not worth your time to paddle out. Pick up a nice skim board. You can use it no matter what the conditions are and can do a hell of a lot more things on that then you can on a surf board in NJ. As long as you get a big enough board that can support your weight you can surf on it also. Well atleast I can.

Sorry to piss off all the surfers but I can't remember the last time it was worth it to take my board out.

Its all good

Ok the whole deal bout surfing isnt just to catch a good wave but actually the enjoyment of being out on the ocean- even its it flat i still paddle out and goof around with some of my friends-and watching the sun set while just chillen on your board is awesome- and well to note ill make sure everytime i drop in i aim for those skimboarders j/k but not really
and hey dont paddle out no skin off my back just more waves for other people

Chad i didn't know you surfed, i have skimboarder before but it is hard with the beaches to actually shoot straight out and ride the wave....still fun though. I just enjoy being at the beach, I have seen plenty of small break that I could learn on. Just have to find the right spots.

I heard from someone that down in OCMD right by the inlet they are allowing surfing all day.

Kuz...thanks for the offer but I believe the board may be a bit short for me. I am 6'3" and I thouhgt you were supposed to ride a board that was a few inches taller, as far as shortboards go.

And to answer the original question, that's all there is to it. Where will you be going to the beach? There has to be a local shop within 30 minutes, max. I recommend starting on a bigger board, no question. You'll build a lot more confidence, be able to paddle, catch waves, etc a lot more easily.

Yeah been surfing since I was a little kid then I got into skimboarding when I was about 15. If you come down to south jersey this year just give me a call I have my surf board you can use and also a bunch of skim boards you can try out if you want.
