Need Help: Purchasing New Laptop

I want to get my girlfriend a laptop for her birthday. She'll use it mainly for internet and e-mail and I have office and that kind of crap on disk that I can load on.

Can anybody give me suggestions on what to get? It doesn't have to be crazy and I want a good deal.

There were plenty this morning. For what you say you are using it for, anything that is sold new will work just fine.

Well, since I work on computers for a living, and at one point in my life, I use to repair nothing but laptops, I've gotten to see just about every brand out there lol.

Let me start by saying No Dell, or Compaq. HP's are nice. Make sure it's HP, not Compaq. HP bought Compaq but they still differentiate between the 2. HP right now has some beautiful, small, light weight laptops at pretty good prices.

Also, the Sonys are nice.

And please stay away from Toshiba's....grrrr lol.

Alright I'll look into Sony and HP

Forgot to mention small and light weight is something that I like. I have both a HUGE dell that weighs about 100lbs and a little IBM that weights about nothing. The dell is to big and clumsy it blows.

I don't have much of a preference of brand really but never had to fix them for the most part. I like Toshiba and Sony for the screens and IBM/Levono for their cases. 05 seems to have brand preferences though, I would love to hear the pros and cons about the listed manufacturers.

I have an HP myself, and my wife has a Dell. But Dell does have some decent ones sometimes, problem is, most of their worthwhile ones are up in price.

But yeah, I'm actually looking at picking up another small HP so I can use it in my car so I can data log my car.

lenovo/ibm are great but you don't get a whole lot ( besides unmatched quality and support ) for the price

acer has some decent budget laptops too, i just picked up an acer extensa 4620z for $600, 2gb ram 160gb hdd

See I have a x60 lenovo for work and its cool cause its small and light but it doesn't have a cd drive so hooking it up to a external drive for software updates and such becomes a bit of a PITA.

What kind of price range should I be looking at?

Price range is entirely up to you. If aren't looking for something outrageous, and you really think you or her rather, is going to use it just for email, internet, and Office, then I wouls say anywhere from $400-$700 price range.

I mean here is an idea, sold out, but you get an idea of price.

That's an HP, and pretty good specs for the price. And it's an AMD X2 64bit Dual Core which is a great processor.

Check out HP's website even.

I dont know how the amd versions of those laptops were but the ones with intel cpu's where absolute garbage. THE slowest P4 laptop I've ever used in my entire life. My P3 650 with 192mb of ram would run circles around it.

I have a dell, Hp, Toshiba, And a Acer laptop. Dell = garbage. Hp is fiver years old and runs great. Toshiba is a year old and runs great. Acer runs great except for having vista. My advice. Don't spend more than $650

Right, mine has the AMD. My personal experiences and beliefs..... AMD>Intel. Runs flawlessly and great.. never had a problem with this laptop. My girlfriend has a new generation AMD laptop from HP and it is really sweet.... swivel screen and notepad... it is really cool.
