dude, think of it this way ok...

if you held your cars engine at 3,000 RPM for a minute, thats 3000 revolutions per minute. Theres 60 seconds in a minute obviously, so divide 3000 by 60, and you get 50. So that happens 50 times a second...

yes its slowed down

yep, that white mist looks a lot like gas & air, and then after the combustion phase, the exhaust valve (left one) surely would open

yes intake right exhaust left....gas and air come in, combust then leave through exhaust valve.

yeah i agree, when 'em' = 'frank'. how about creating a positive and encouraging learning environment here buddy? we're not all master techs... everyone is at a different point in their automotive education.

and jc8889... i believe thats exactly what an explosion looks like... its an element(s) igniting extremely fast and expanding... which is what creates the incredible force outward. i think thats what any explosion would look like if it were slowed down a lot.

very cool vid though... you can totally understand how it works and picture it in your head a million times but its not the same as seeing it actually happen.

a very widely believed thought. It is actually a highly controlled burn. The only time you get an "explosion" in the cylinder, is when you have knock. Thats what causes knock.

detonation you mean.

Damn, the link wont open for me. I tried to find it on the web but couldnt.

Ignition timing kind of works the other way. Unless you are running really low octane like you said, 83. You normaly run less ignition timing under high load and more ignition timing under low load.

define more and less timing, i call it advanced and retarded. im sayin if he was runnin high octane itd be runnin like 10-20 BTDC that vid is showin it sprkin at mayb 5 BTDC which is like nothing. if he had piss gas then maybe id see it runnin 5 BTDC.dont quote me but ive ran ignition checks on my car during my coil testing and when i put er under a huge load its run to almost 60 BTDC and at idle its 5 ATDC....dunno if its the same or diff on other cars but i kno 60 degrees btdc is kinda nuts on those piston thingys so it all my be apples and oranges.....

and i agree with dave now that i think about it, they prolly dialed it all back so the camera would survive! still a great vid.....saved to favs

and ps,

sorry brian

More ignition timing is 20 btdc, less timing is 10 btdc.

Like I said, ignition timing is based off of load. When you say you are putting the car under a huge load, how are you doing it? Lets take a 500whp Supra on pump gas for example. At idle ignition timing will be around 11-15*. At peak torque when VE is highest, the timing will be around 8* and only slightly ramp up to redline. That same motor tuned to 400whp will still idle at 11-15*, but now take around 11-12* of timing at peak torque.

Piston and rotary engines still have the same tendencies when it comes to ignition timing.
