1)To see how long you should go between oil changes and 2) make sure all is kosher inside your engine.

I use Blackstone Labs (Link posted above).
I mainly use it to determine how long my oil can last and also what condition my engine is in. If there is any excessive wear and tear, there will be an abnormal amount of metal XYZ in the oil. You'll need to find out what materials your engine components are made of to make a good analysis, though. Running Mobil 10w-30, I've found that my 97 Miata can get about 5500 miles before there is viscosity break down. I switched to Amsoil and found that I can go 10,000+ miles. I didn't go to a longer interval since I change out both the oil and filter every 12 months; I just didn't drive it enough in one year to find the limit of Amsoil. I'll be doing the same tests on my MSM but I don't expect the same mileage due to the extra power and heat that it makes over my 97. I'm running Mobil 1 now and then will switch to Amsoil on the next change. I use OE Mazda filters. For $20, it's a good bargain to find out what's going on inside your engine and what oils are good and which ones aren't. If I drove more, I'd test out different brands.

They will basically tell you everything. As in, how many contaminants are in the oil, what kind of contaminants - as in is it from combustion (gas) or metal (piston rings are going), etc.

An analysis showed fuel in the oil, which points towards a ring problem. Looks to be an issue with just the US-spec RS4, though. A good read, especially if you own one. This problem led to a custom oil to be made to help reduce the severity of the problem.

The oil analysis, will tell what is going on inside your engine, and will tell everything from how well your engine hold up to under stress.

Oil analysis gives you also the percentages of what metal was found in the oil of you vehicle. You can then check your percentages on a chart to see if everything in side your block is Okey dokey, if something is wacked and very high like your main and rod journal bearing metal count was high then you know you must get new ones. Sorry I was bored and had to write something.
My teacher at ATC just bought oil analysis kit and it cost him 15.00 or so. Some company called WIX I believe.
