Go to DMV, regrestation, and ask. Bring several options with you, chances are, you arent gonna get your first pick.

^Yea, you put your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choices and they just mail you one. You dont find out which one it is till you get it in the mail.
Most full services notarys can do it too.

when I got my plate, I went to AAA. they were able to tell me right then and there if my plate was taken.
