Corvette haters, stay away...

Blue Devil Lives!! When GM's vice chairman speaks of an ultra-performance Corvette, we listen
BOB GRITZINGER
Posted Date: 6/29/05
General Motors vice chairman Bob Lutz won’t confirm this car exists, but he is not saying it doesn’t. We first wrote about Chevrolet’s ultra-performance Corvette—dubbed Blue Devil, most likely to catch the attention of GM CEO and Duke Blue Devil grad Rick Wagoner—shortly before the sixth-generation Corvette debuted at the Detroit auto show in January (AW, Dec. 22 and 29, 2004). We asked Lutz about the car during a recent exclusive interview with AutoWeek.

“Let’s just say [Corvette chief engineer] Dave Hill is not a guy who likes playing second fiddle to any high-performance car on the road,” said Lutz. “My guess is we’re going to find a way to do something beyond the Z06, that would be at a much higher price point, and which would compete with some of the leading high-performance cars of the world.”

Lutz said the car may be delayed while the company focuses most of its engineering might on pulling ahead profit-making vehicles like its next-generation large sport/utilities and pickups.

“But there is certainly no lack of desire on anyone’s part to establish the supremacy of the Corvette,” says Lutz.

Spied on the Nurbürgring, Blue Devil appears to be living up to the earlier hype. Eyewitnesses said the car sounds supercharged, confirming reports the engine is likely a blown version of the Z06’s 7.0-liter V8, producing upward of 600 hp. Look for lightweight carbon fiber body parts to reduce weight to about 2900 pounds.

Pricing will likely start somewhere around $100,000 if and when the car makes production in 2006.

**personal thoughts**
It's got 500hp stock. Supercharged for 600hp? And they want it to be the supreme supercar? Shoulda went with turbo, IMO.

C6? Yum.

Supercharged C6? Double yum.

BUT, for someone spending 100 grand, they'll want a bit of exclusivity. This car almost looks just like the standard C6. I'm not saying there isn't enough go, but there isn't enough show for 100K.

I agree that it doesn't look exclusive enough for 100k. If I was looking for a domestic exotic I would go for the GT40 over all.

Although I'm a big fan of turbos I'll gladly take a 600hp supercharged motor.

Get a viper for about $85K spend the extra $15K on the motor and it will be way better then this vette. $100K is just too much to ask for a vette with no major changes than the current one except a SC.

Z06 handling > fat Viper.

If I had the loot, I'd buy that beast in a second.

Turbocharging the LS7 would have been a horrible idea.

I fully support this vette though.

I don't get it?

$100K for what? Seriously. What makes this worth 2X the price of a C6?
Does it have gold coilovers? where is the money going?

My father paid $45K for his new 04 Z06. Add 15K for his Ling SC kit, headers/exhaust/tuning etc. 510whp, $60K price tag. I don't get why you need to spend $40K more for this thing.

even though it's one of my favorite cars, the c5 z06 is not even comparable to the c6 z51, let alone the c6 z06 or the "blue devil"

the main difference is engineering - they basically just evolved the c5 platform when developing the c6, but chevy left no part of it untouched.

if you can't tell the difference from the specs between the ls6, ls2, ls7 and the chassis changes - i would take one for a test drive. a neighbor of mine just bought a c6 z51 and it's definitely a more refined car than my cousin's z06. i've driven both.

Where is the money going? Ask that same question to those who buy a 120k porsche that is slower than a c6 z06.

Seriously, that's a stupid way to compare things. The difference is FAR more than just a hp number.

You have to admit that it is a ton more money over the base price of the C6. I just don't see there being that many additions to warrant the price. Same chasis, maybe CF body panels which save little weight over the fiberglass ones, maybe better suspension, more HP but what else?. How do you justify the doubling of price from a base model?

How does Subaru?

Base Impreza RS - $18,245
Impreza WRX STI - $32,445

Why would anyone buy an STI when you can buy an RS and drop an EJ257 in for a couple grand? Because there's a lot more that's different between the two models...which I'm sure is the case with the Vettes.

How does Porsche justify it?

911 Carerra - $69,300
911 Carerra GT2 - $191,700

This is a little extreme, but I guarantee you, the guy in the GT2 won't be hiding from base Carreras anytime soon.

The "Blue Devil" is a supercar (like the Ford GT) that just happens to LOOK like a C6 Corvette. It's a completely different animal.
