Photo guy: recomended digital SLRs?

Hey--

I know we have a lot of photo-philes here on TST and I am really looking to upgrade from my Nikon Coolpix--- and my dad is getting tired of me always borrowing his D50.

So-- I am looking for advice or comparisons of a few of the big name DSLRS because I know almost nothing about still photgraphy (but am really interested in it)

here is what I have been looking at so far--

Canon Rebel XT
Canon Rebel XTi

Nikon D50-60-70?

I know these models have hudreds of dollars differences in their prices-- but I am looking for a nice camera with decent glass that will last me a long time, I am not the type that will go out each year and buy the newest on the market. I am also looking for fully manual controls (I think all the cameras I listed may have them, but some maybe more than others???). I am also looking for something that has a decent stock lens...not a camera that I am gonna have to buy and then go out and buy a decent lens for it that costs more than the body does, meanwhile, the stock lens never gets used. A decent stock lens is a must (but I do plan to upgrade eventually)

I plan on doing a ton more research before I buy anything, but since I have seen some SICK photos taken from TST members I figured I would see what you guys think.

Back in the days when I was a film student Canon was widely understood to make the best glass on the market-- so I am a little partial to canon- BUT it seems like Nikon has a big chunk of the market with their D-series, and I love my dads D50. So thats where I stand...

feed me!

oh and the title should say "Photo Guys" not "Photo Guy"--

i have the D50 i love it and its a great entry level DSLR at like 600 or so plus you can use all the nikon lenses! unfortunately it is not as fast as the D70s, D80 , or D200 but you pay for what you get.... if you want to see some of my work go to www.legendaryphotos.net all taken with my D50 or check the gallery for my last photoshoots

It's been a while since I have worked at a camera shop, so I might be out of touch!

Out of all of the Nikon bodies, I would god with the "higher end" bodies/kits, such as the D70S or D80 (whatever is the latest now). I say this because you plan to keep the body for a while. Personally I think the D70/80 will give you more room to grow. I know some people will say that the D50 will be plenty, but this is just my opinion.

get the D50, spend the extra money on the best lens u can afford, i think the lens makes a bigger difference than the camera. and u can always upgrade ur camera and use the same lens. thats what i been told anyway

I know when the D70 first came out, the 18-70 kit lens was considered to be pretty good for a kit lens. I know the D50 kit lens is not as good though. Maybe the D70S with the 18070 would be a good starting point?

WRXD: I am in the same exact boat as you. I am looking at all of the cameras you are and have gone to a couple camera shops to try and learn more and get a better feal for the differences between the different models.

Similar to you I have been very happy with my Cannon cameras, but after actually getting to take some quick shots with the D50, D80, and Rebel Xt yesterday I must say the Nikon's are very nice which makes my decision even harder. It seems like 50/50 almost.

Since I don't have any personal experience all I can reccomend is cnet.com for reviews and pricing, and possibly any photography forums ie. Honda-Tech has a Nikon and Cannon Thread.

u can get the d70 lens with the d50, the difference between the d50 and 70 are not huge, but gettin a better lens is. and for nikon vs canon, ur dad has a nikon so u can borrow lenses off eachother

I'm looking around for a DSLR myself but I think I am going to end up with a Sony Alpha because all of the lenses for my Minolta Maxxum 70 will fit the Alpha. My point isif you have access to a variety of lenses from your father who has the same camera definately get that one.

the D70 and D70s are the fastest nikons for the $ its the only thing against the D50. theres a reason its an entry level DSLR 1.5 fps 6.1mp and other numbers. ALSO the 18-55 lens that is available with the D50 is great lens it is made specifically for the digital camera (DX) also it contains the quallity ED glass. if you opt to buy that lens with it a good brother for it is the 55-200mm lens with the same 52mm lens for filters as well as the compact size
