Insurance Sucks!!!

So I need some help with my current insurance situation. Here is how my insurance is set up...

The Rx-7 is insured under Geico with me as a secondary driver and my dad as the main driver.

My dad's truck is insured with progresive. I am a secondary driver on that also.THe reason we have two different insurance companies is becasue progressive billed me for 5,200 dollars a year JUST FOR MY CAR. So I dropped the mazda and insured it under geico with my dad as the main driver and me as the secondary driver. Which happened to be 2,200 a year.

Now...THe problem....My dad's insurance agent(from progressive) told him today that it is illegal in PA to have 2 different insurance policies??? WTF????

There is no way I am paying over 5,000$ a year for a car that I drive about 30miles a week. Can anyone help me out????

So, drop your dad as the primary driver of your car. It cant be that much more money. Also check around more insurance places. Quotes are fast and easy.

I have my own insurance problem right now. I cant find a company that is going to insure the car I am buying. They say it is too rare

The Rx-7 is in my dad's name. It is titled, registered, and the loan is in his name. So I can't drop him off the insurance.

See if Geico will give you a good rate to add the truck to the policy that has the RX-7. Make sure you tell your progressive agent this, then maybe he will move his ass and try to get you a reasonable rate on the RX-7.

Cant you get the RX7 and truck in with the same company and make you the secondary driver on the rx7 and still have it be cheap? Or you could try to get a policy in which you have a different car as your primary car and the rx7 as the secondary car. Example: I have my 86 BMW as my Primary and my STi as my secondary....saved me $200 a month. I was paying $320/mo for the STi when it was my primary and im 26yrs old with a squeaky clean record. Just my .02.

As for this, im not sure that an insurance company can alter its rates. I asked my old insurance company (USAA) if they could match my new rate (Geico) and they said no. They said that they have to turn their rates in at the beginning of each year and it would be illegal to make it lower than they reported the insurance to be (if this makes sense). Therefor auto insurance isnt a price match type of business. Not sure how much water this holds, but that is what they told me. I tend to believe this though, cause they couldnt keep me as a customer. So take that for what its worth, good luck!

Sometimes insureance agents can work the system an get you a lower rate. Kind of like how people with no cats can work the system and pass emissions!

For those prices, you really need to consider a different insurance co. Is the RX-7 you daily driver?? If not look into some type of collector car insurance, I'm sure it would fit in to that category.

As far as the multiple insurance company thing goes, it's a bunch of crap. I use three different companies. Wife's Civic- Progressive. My Sprinter Van & Ford Super Duty - Allstate. My Jeep- State Farm.

Oh yes it can!!

I kept an eclipse sitting in my driveway as my primary car. It infact saved me more money to insure 2 cars then just the rx7. I'ts not going to be cheap anywhere you go. You gotta pay to play unfortunatly. I never heard that its illegal to have 2 insurance companys under 1 name though but pa has some weird laws so it might be true. Currently my car isn't insured bc its not drivble so I can't refer you to my agent. However when i did have it insured with 2 cars the rx7 alone was over 3000 a year. That on top of gas prices with such a fuel efficient car (joke) and you should see why it shouldn't be a DD. Hehe, dont worry you'll learn reeeeeeal fast how expensive these cars are. Sorry to hear about your engine btw.

Question. How many licensed drivers are in your household and how many cars are registered to that household?

I think the problem the agent might be referring to is if those numbers are the same, example 2 cars with 2 licensed household members, each person must have a primary vehicle to drive. If you are insuring the cars under 2 different company's to avoid this situation, he might be trying to tell you that you are committing some kind of fraud.

Having 2 different insurance carriers for the same household is in its self totally legal. I think there just might be some kind of mis-communication going on here.

Good luck getting it straightened out!

If you are lucky enough and can get auto/home insurance from the same company (prudential), you can save a lot of money that way. I am also on a family plan with the student discount as well. So all together, for a year I pay $958 dollars. It kind of sucks because last year I paid $883, and the raised our insurance because they merged with another company. But I can't bitch because paying under $1K a year and only being 20 years old is not that bad. However it is funny that I am paying over what my cars book value is. I just wish in general insurance wasn't so much. My one friend has to pay over $1,800 a year for the type of car he drives (Honda Accord). However we are forced to pay it, and if we don’t, can get in a lot of trouble. So good luck and I never heard of it being a problem with having different insurance companies.
