Question about wireless flash

I picked up a 430EX II Speedlite yesterday and been practicing with it. I just got the wireless working with my T3i but the built in flash still flashes. Is this normal and can it be turned off? I can't figure it out. The Speedlite only flashes if the other one is popped up

does canon allow you to have it fire but not add to the exposure? i know with nikon you can have it only go off to fire the flashes. mind you depending on your settings it might still show up slightly. and read you manuals.

That on camera flash triggers a split second sooner than your off camera flash to trigger that off camera flash...

So the on-camera flash doesn't even do anything for the picture?
