COMPLAINT! How you got your car...

Okay heres my complaint or question or problem, whatever you want to call it. First off i have worked my ass off since i have been 14 and i am now turning 21. I am a full time student and still work 40 hours a week with a decent paying job. Now i purchased 2 years ago a civic. Now i barley did that with taking loans. I of course have the usual bills but all i see is 17, 18 and 19 years olds with like STI's and Supra's or rsx-s with like another 10,000 under the hood. First off how does everyone get the money for all this? I mean i save but with my bills its not that much to buy a 40-50 thousend dollar car and throw another 10 under the hood. Truthfully it actually pisses me off. Am i missing something? Or does all their mom and dad's pay their bills or buy their cars for them. SOMEONE GIVE ME CLOSURE!

I dont think there are ALOt of "kids" driving around in $30k-$50k cars, but i agree there are some around. Unless they came into money turning 18, they had help (aka mom and dad). Not to mention, delaware , montgomery and chester countys are 3 of the wealthiest counties in the country.
Now, i can not comment on if i think that is right or wrong because im pretty sure ill be buying my kids a nice car for there 18th birthday. As a father i want the best for my kids.

I know what you mean dude. I work full time too (starting college in the fall).
And I do have bills too...
But everything I have I bought for myself- MY car, MY insurance, MY mods.
Sometimes it does bug me too. How is it fair when I have to work my ass off for everything I have when all these little rich fu*kers have do is ask mommy and daddy and BOOM, theres their brand new car.
But you know what, that is just how the world works. Nothing I can do about it, so I just dont waste my time thinking about out. It will always be like that.

Yea i dont know anyone that age with those cars. And if there is any around mommy and daddy had to of helped. Most of peoplei know are just stupid with money and if they want a nice car they end up spending money on other stuff and then complaining about how they cant afford a better car then what they have.

i find it to be absolutly abnoxious knowing that some parents actually bought, chipped in etc for the cars some of these brats are driving around these days.. "graduation presents" etc that **** kills me.

I just turned 20, I am a travel agent for AAA and full-time college student. I just got lucky with my job and somehow got a wrx for $22k and have $20k into it so far. After winter spending somewhere near 8k, I should be close to broke lol.

i bought my wrx when i was 20. i've been working since i was 8, starting with a paper route then various retail jobs as a teen. i had a big down payment and have a car loan in my own name and insurance in my own name. i pay for everything by working 2 jobs at 50+ hours a week and still manage school part time.

I hate seeing kids in expensive cars, exspecially when you know they didnt pay for them. Some kid in my nieghborhood got a leased s2000 for graduating highschool. it pisses me off. My parents used to front me money when i was younger but i always paid them off promptly.

I got a paper route when i was 13 and had summer jobs since 10th grade and worked part time during the school years, And I still own 2 pretty cheap cars.

Some of us have been around back when Bellbottoms were in style and currently have secure careers. I would suggest you definitely stay in school and keep working hard. It does pay off eventually (I’m sure it doesn’t seem like it right now) but it will. Some people may say that school doesn’t guarantee you a job, however, it does increase your chances 10 fold over someone that does not have the education that you will have.

Many of my friends that did not go the route that I went back in the 90s are really hurting now in 2006 with a wife, kids, and can barley pay the rent, let alone afford a $5,000 used POS. You’re ahead of the curveball in many respects.

One piece of advice when in the “car game” or in life… try and stay out of the credit card trap. I know you probably have loans (that’s to be expected) however, stay out of debt when it comes to everything else. I know people that earn more money than I do, however, they have less disposable income than myself because credit card debt has come back and taken a chunk out of their azz.

But stick with it. Thirteen years ago I was rolling in an ‘85 Subaru wagon… things will change for you too.

I hear ya on that one. I am working myself out of a hole I dug right now. It is not good that I effed up, but I am glad I learned my lesson the hard way now while I'm young (just turned 22) rather then when I'm older and have a mortgage & kids.

My parents gave me everything I needed when I was growing up- a lawn mower. And the ability to knock on doors to ask people if the wanted their lawn cut. I busted my a$$ for many summers and when I got my license I had around $15000 set aside for a car. My old man said "No. If you want to drive, take your mom's Buick. If you want your own car, well, fix the Vega."
The Vega, the car with 170k on the clock- which is 160k past it's life expectancy- my dad bought it new back in '76 and drove it every day for years. He passed it on to my sisters, who took turns destroying it further and eventually the timing belt let loose and wrecked the cylinder head.
My dad said ' Its all yours. If you want to drive it, get a manual and fix it.'

That was the best present ever. I remember kids when I was in school that got the new Trans Ams, and Mustangs, and one kid had a new Corvette, looking back now- they were all spoiled a$$holes with no respect for what they had.

Think of it this way. the harder you work for what you own, the more you will respect what you own.

My entire childhood was a dream of getting a project 1968 Dodge Charger. And fixing it up throughout high school and having it done by the time i got my licence. But yeah i was 13 and it didnt happen soo.. I'm here now with a passat and a camaro and paying for college all with my own money

A flipside to this thread that hasnt been discussed yet is this:

How many of you guys still live with your parents? In my experience, most of the younger guys out there that can afford nice cars and lots of mods, can ONLY afford those things because their parents are still paying for EVERYTHING but their car, mods, insurance, and cell.

I commend anyone who works for everything they have, goes to school, holds a full time time job and is able to balance all of that with a expensive hobby like auto tuning. However, keep in mind that most people wouldnt be able to afford any of the things they have if they were also paying rent,food, electric/gas/oil, internet, cable, cell phone, car payments, insurance, clothes, pets....etc etc etc.

I say, if you are pulling your car off because your parents are letting you live with them, then you should be kissing their feet because not everyone is as lucky.

When I was 20, I was going to school full time and working full time in the summers. I WOULD NEVER DREAM of affording a car like a WRX (91 Prizm baby) let alone having the money to mod it. I saved for almost 2 years to make my DOWN PAYMENT on my car. You guys are lucky! Be thankful for what you have, and F the kids that get the stuff handed to them.

you cant afford to hook up a civic?---i am in the same boat as you man... and workin while going to school Ive built what i think is a pretty well rounded car for like 8-10k....of course to do that I give up spring break trips and some other BS that i dont need (ipods, big screens, overpriced clothes)

but man if you cant afford to hook up a civic on 40 hrs a week its something other then lack of money...


edit: i live with my parents, senior in college, but i pay gas, insurance bills etc...

the 10k civic ( and thats being generous, i could have built it for cheaper with what i know now....
