well if its 5 speed im guessing its si ?....in which case either a zc or b16 are not all that hard.....if your car isnt an si though your gonna have somw wiring to do....in which case i have a sale to make, if you dont have an si i have the entire interior harness already wired for vtec, youd just need the motor harness, but that should come with the motor in most cases....but yea...id say zc is the easiest....b16 not far behind

they are, but they arent...once you go b18 theres mods to be done...usually....zc doesnt put out as much, but it can be turbod and hold up a little better then b series under boost, atleast thats been my experience

are you looking for vtec? or just to do a engine swap due to engine damage? i see a lot of guys that come in my shop and ask the same question. you have to think about with you looking for, and how much you want to spend. if you looking for an inexpensive and easy swap you may want to consider d16. im pro B series engines but if you dont have much cash and just want vtec and a newer engine do a D series. everything will be able to be swaped over ie. mounts, linkage, axles. wiring would just have to be done. if you do a b series you have to think about mounts, linkage, axles, possiable knuckles(std). just figured i would you my $.02 in.

Good thinking. Your best bet would be to swap in a D16Z6 or D16Y8 and convert to OBD-1.

If your freind is that unfamiliar with what is neccesary for the swap i would suggest it be done professionaly. At which point i would ask the person installing everything how to do it. If your freind already doesnt know that he needs harnesses to swap and various other parts, i doubt he would be able to even install them correctly.
However good luck with the swap and do something originall...
