Driver flees after crashing million-dollar Ferrari in Malibu

Police in Los Angeles's plush Malibu district were hunting for the driver of a one-million-dollar Ferrari after the sports car was reduced to scrap in a dramatic high-speed crash.

The driver of the high-performance Ferrari Enzo, which retails for between 600,000 dollars and one million dollars and has a top speed of more than 320 kilometers (200 miles) per hour, fled the scene after the early-morning accident.

The passenger of the car suffered a minor injury and was treated at the scene after the car struck a power pole on the legendary Pacific Coast Highway, said Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Ron Haralson.

"We have the passenger, who told us the driver did flee from the scene," Sheriff's Sergeant Philip Brooks told Fox 11 News, adding that the driver was apparently unharmed.

"And we ... followed some footprints up the side of the hill in an effort to locate the driver," he added.

Authorities believe the Ferrari "was traveling at least 100 mph (160 kph), and it will probably be a lot more than that once we conclude our investigation," Brooks said.

The impact sheared the red Italian sports car in half, and the entire front section separated from the rest of the shredded vehicle.

"For a million dollars, you get a very good passenger-safety system, and apparently, in this case, it did work," Brooks said.

Here's the insight from someone who lives by there on my crossfire forum...

This is getting funnier... From the CNN story, the owner is a gentleman by the name of Stephan Ericcson and he says that a German friend by the name of Deitrick was driving the car, They were racing a Mercedes McLaren SLR down the Pacific Coast Highway when they lost control and hit a telephone pole... The driver (Deitrick), jumped out of the car and ran away and they have not found him... The owner, who insists he was a passenger had tested positive for booze...

http://www.mulhollandraceway.org/ They have been racing the canyons in LA for 25 years, I used to do it too when I was a dumb kid... Usually in the middle of the night and usually on a Tuesday... This crash happened very near Decker Canyon road which is one of the most challenging canyon roads in California....

YEP... They have shut down access to their website... I'll bet this was a member of the run-group...

It's been DEAD serious for 25 years... When I ran with them years ago, the canyons in LA were virtually desolate and you never had to worry about traffic... Now, those canyons have multi-million dollar homes everywhere and the traffic can be unexpected... That is why I only run on the track anymore... But it still exists and is very secretive, exclusive and very, very dangerous...

I'm only guessing that this knucklehead was coming back from one of their midnight events, especially since the accident happened at 6am on Tuesday morning near Decker Canyon and he said the other car was a Mercedes Mclaren SLR... I would guess they were probably finishing-up their night and going back home... And I would guess there were at least 20 other cars in the group...

Read the rules... The group always has a SWEEPER car that picks-up the UNFORTUNATES... and looks for skid marks... And they always leave their dead behind...
Therefore (THE ILLUSIVE DEITER) was probably picked-up by the sweeper...
