Renn, spitting nonsense you know nothing about is how rumors start.

Both the Cobb ap and the utec have their good and bad points. I personally like utecs on my cars. Some people like Cobb ap's. Goodfella- I'll get a quote for you tomorrow

thank you. not sure what intake works the best verses just doing a drop in so whatever you think is the best bet. same goes for the downpipe. i know i would like to do catless but unsure if i should go divorced or just bellmouth. i really looking for a car that i can daily drive and run a 12 sec 1/4 with without blowing up or going big turbo.

had this argument before with someone else.

bottom line both utec and cobb are wastes of money imho and you should just tune open source unless you are gonna go with an ots tune.

No arguement to be had. If you want to have a discussion then please explain why the ap and utec are wastes of money and why os is the almighty answer.

because in my opinion it isn't worth paying 600 dollars for an AP or 1000 for a utec so you can switch maps and play with the obd functions.

unless i'm mistaken you can tune just as well os. i always though the only big benefit of either of the above was that they are easy to retune and you don't need to start from scratch on your tune again.

so in the op's case if he is just trying to go stage 2 he would be fine tuning os or going ots stage 2 with his ap. not necessary at all to spend a grand on anything for his goals.

if he is tuning the car, an aps 70mm intake and invidia catless bellmouth dp along with whatever cbe and he will run 12's all day if he's a decent driver. i ran a 12.3 @ 111 stock turbo with meth and ewg... idk if i still am but that was the fastest pump gas stock turbo time for STi's like 2 years ago. i've had a bunch of bad experiences with ap and cobb in general and seen people frustrated with their utec. so i went open source and ended up making more power and sold the ap for a profit.

UTEC's are dirt cheap used and with everyone switching to the accesspoint there are tons of them out there. I picked up a used delta with a map switch for $300. The older versions of the utec are just as useful and can be had for $250 or so. Price isnt an issue when a tactric cable is $180 with the connector.

You also get:
on the fly map switching
no lift shift
more sensitive knock correction

Combining the UTEC and OS gets you pretty damn close to the features of a full stand alone ecu. Not to mention you dont have to wait for the ecu to flash 10 times while tuning the car.

So is open source the way to go? I didn't know it was a grand to go utec. Not looking to spend that on a daily driver. That was what I was looking to spend on parts alone not just engine management.

you can get a used tactrix cable and flash with a laptop..

aps 70mm, invidia catless bellmouth dp, and a protune on either your ap or open source will be less than 1000. might as well tune with cobb since you have it, it's not any worse than open source i just don't personally see the need to spend 600 dollars when you can do it for free, or the cost of a tactrix cable if you want to datalog or change maps.

utec also isn't really any worse than cobb, but it's arguably not that much better especially for the cost.

I've never known anyone to spend 1000 for a Utec to be honest. Mine cost me 200 and I love it, map switching on the fly ftw (saved my ass when I got crap gas while on vacation).

Time for this conversation to wind down unless the OP wants to change the title and have the thread moved to the Subaru section. Besides Honest_Bob wins for having all the right answers as to why you use the Utec
