Electric Supercharger Boosts Torque 50% and Reduces CO2 by 20%

Making Gasoline Engines as Efficient as Diesel....

The most common type of hybrid car uses electricity stored in batteries to power an electric motor. But what if instead of going to a motor, that electricity was used to power an electric supercharger? That's exactly what UK firm Controlled Power Technologies (CPT) is doing, and the results are promising. Tests on various engine types have shown that a gasoline engine equipped with this tech can compete with a diesel, and torque has been increased by 40-50% and CO2 emissions have been reduced by around 20%.

Concept has been around for a while, and it's been extremely inefficient and expensive up until this point.

I'd run it depending on the cost - it does look like this company is well educated and researched compared to all those other cheap designs.

I was about to make fun of this thread until I did some reading. Thought it was a generic question but this is a good read.

x2, this is very interesting, if it's affordable I'd get one! So who'll be the first to try to over volt this thing and push some extra air through it? No Pulley to shrink for faster RPM's, just a simple tune

One thing I don't understand is that they lowered CO2 output by pushing more air in and burning more fuel. I'm assuming that they retuned for this and the car is runnign a different AFR then factory to get this number. Am I the only one that thinks this is a shady statistic?

Sounds like a cool product, but your gonna need a good battery and an upgraded alternator if you plan on using any of the cars accessories(headlights, heat, radio, ect.)

Also, how does this compare to a traditional supercharger with engine effeciency?

seems like a nice way to make more power, but how is this gonna make your car more efficient?

I think they mean effecient as in making a small motor make the same HP as a larger one. So essentially it is worthless unelss you are willing to trade your 2.0 for a 1.5

I want one for my Miata!!!. It'd be perfect and so easy to mount. Id need a standalone tho and an alternator etc, but maybe down the line this'll be a good option if it does work well

I don't get why the hell people bother with electric superchargers.

It adds inefficiency by definition. Instead of just harnessing the mechanical energy straight from the engine, you convert it into electricity, which creates losses, and back into mechanical energy, creating even more losses.

Benefit? Uhhh...I guess you can put it wherever you want because it runs off wires.

Thomas Knight has done some proto-types but the issues include supplying enough consist electric power to keep the s/c running most of the time it's only good for 10 to 15 seconds, atleast the ones I know of.
I mention that cause the whole time it's been around he was the only person I know that dumped money into the field and it is that to an existent a waste.
