Cash for clunkers

The government is running a program where if your car qualifies as a clunker they will give you $4,500 towards your trade in value if you buy a more efficient car....

So i just took a walk out back of the dealership i work at and as our part of the deal with have to disable the engine of the car so it cant be salvaged. I felt my heart drop when i saw 15+ cars running with no oil and runnin some type of salt soulotion. I felt like i was wittnessing a bunch of old people being euthanized except they werent that old and had no health problems....

Haha yeah I read you have to use the salt solution in the engine for 7 minutes and it basically seizes the engine. If the car is made in 1984+ and gets 18mpg or lower it qualifies. You get $3500 if your new car gets 4-9mpg better than the "clunker". $4500 if it gets 10mpg or better.

Kev, get me a job at your place..

REPORT: EPA performs 11th-hour refresh that makes some cars ineligible for Cash for Clunkers
by Michael Harley on Jul 28th 2009 at 11:28AM

It seems the folks working the late shift at the EPA made a few changes to their published numbers just before the federal Car Allowance Rebate System - CARS (a.k.a. "Cash-for-Clunkers") program went into effect last week. The sweetening $3,500 and $4,500 incentives are available to consumers who trade-in 1984 or newer vehicles with a combined fuel economy average of 18 miles-per-gallon, or less in exchange for more fuel efficient transportation (22 mpg or better in the combined cycle).

Owners of certain 1993 Toyota Camry V6 wagons, 1992 Saab 900S hatchbacks (a turbo is shown), and 1988 Toyota 4Runner 2.4-liter models voiced their complains to Edmunds.com, frustrated that their eligible EPA 18 mpg combined ratings had been bumped to ineligible EPA 19 mpg combined ratings as the agency "refreshed" some of its numbers at the last minute. While few of us would complain about a free 5 percent gain in gas mileage, when it unexpectedly robs vehicle owners upwards of $4,500 on a federal incentive program, well, we'd be a bit miffed too, especially as there has been no official announcement as to why the changes have taken place.

Sounds a bit sketchy to me, why check these figures 17 years later?

This program is suspened as of midnight tonight, http://finance.yahoo.com/news/AP-sou...&asset=&ccode=

Edit: We have abt 12 cars and be blew up an older f-150 and a 02 kia minivan. You'd be suprised how long an engine will run w/o oil while boucing off the rev limiter.

its funny cuz ALL Geo metros are exempt from this whole thing. my 91 Regal get 18 mpg and i wouldnt have to give it up for this thing. and the 78 Caddy that i plan to buy is too old for the program.

Its not a scam.. Its just a system they are saying will help the environment, but in reality, its there way of boosting the car businesses a little bit, after the slow sales from the recession.

No, its a a scam. You are taking tax dollars from one person, and giving them to another, so they can buy a new car.

I also heard that it ended last night! More people took advantage of the program then the government ever thought they would.

Ha, my thoughts exactly. I love it when the government steals from everyone and gives it to people who don’t need it.

Oh well, at least I have $8,000 coming since I bought a house this year. At least it’s not destroying perfectly good cars that could have been given to charity or something to auction off and to raise money.

Way to go misinformation. Senate still needs to vote for the additional funds to be passed. Also, the extra $ is not "more" money since it is being transferred from an existing renewable energy program.

Heavy auto sales will help stimulate the economy people thats why they are doing this... If theres a heavy demand for cars and trucks again it will in turn create jobs.. etc etc etc..

Auto sales have always been a big part of Americas economy so i agree with what they are doing.

At least they are doing something.
