I was happy with it until i finally learned how to drive stick well enough that it was killing me to drive auto. I also realised that auto was like a whole second slow at the track then the manuals. So then i was looking for an I30. Pretty much the same thing as the maxima but if you could find one with a manual tranny it came with VLSD. Well that just took forever so then on maxima.org i found someone selling a black on black leather 99 with a supercharger on it. I know it sucks buying a car thats already modded 1) because you didnt acctually do the work and 2) because things already start to go wrong. Well not long after i got it the alternaotor went out. Then about a month later i had to replace the tranny because of a factory defect in it (so i was told). Well after that got worked out the radio blew out on me. Oo well i thought because the sound of FI is just so nice. So after about 3 months of driving with no radio i put in a bookshelf radio just for noise. That didnt work out too well so another 3 months went by. Then i started a new job and my boss bet me that he could get an ipod to hook-up to the amps and speakers so i could have music all i would have to do if he did that was buy an ipod. Well it worked and i had radio. During the time with no radio i ended up installing a BBK on the car. Well this consisted of 300zx 4 piston calipers and 13inch 98 Mustang Cobra rotors. I loved this mod because the feeling of stopping was amazing. I went back to school and had a run in with a T/A and he was so pissed off because he couldnt pass me and yelled at me when we got to a stop saying we had to go from a dig. Well needless to say i kept up with him until i had to shift to 3rd and kept mis shifting. Owell i had like 300lbs of stuff in the car since me and my roomate were moving stuff back to school. I finally got to the track and made 2 passes the first wasnt timed because the jerk to the right left b4 the tree started and i was sitten there and people were yelling at me to go so i did. Well 2nd run wasnt as good as the first and i spun 1st so badly i had a 2.708 60ft but the car made it up by the end in the trap with a 103.08@ 14.579. With a better 60ft i should have been in the mid to high 13s im sure. Well then driving home one day a n/a cobra and i were fooling around so he beat me and i was pissed so i wanted more power. I ended up thinking about future plans with the car and made my choices. I had the 2000 maxima variable intake installed, the injectors had to be switched to top feed which was good because i wanted the 3.5L later and that was top feed so i bought 555cc DW injectors, then the 300zx mafs was added, smaller pulley 2.87 good for about 14psi. and the greddy emanage ultimate to tune everything. Took the car to the car show thing at the Saturn dealership and won best audio visual. Then sent the car off to Xotic for the EU to be installed and tuned. 3 weeks later i still had no car and need it because my family was moving. The car ran like crap because the EU never got fully installed and tuned and everytime i would slow down it was stall out on me. It was hard though because this part isnt direct for the maximas and only one other maxima had it working and his car was outta commission at that time. Well december came and the car ended up dieing from something in the alarm system and i couldnt get it working. So i then traded it with the guy that installed my tranny because he always wanted a 99 Fed spec. We did a straight up trade and now i own a 97 with the 3.5L. He ran a 13.3 at 103 i believe and put down 240whp with headers, jwt stage 1 cams, exhaust, and an safc2. The day i got the car i took it to florida for spring break and it made it back and i was suprised at the gas mileage at 28mpg crusing at about 80. No real plans for this one at all just want to save up for an STi now. FWD for the loss. Last edited by SeMaxima99; 10-26-2008 at 03:21 PM. Reason: New Car! |

Holy crap man! You were all over the place with that car, and now you are thinking about saving up for an STI?
Was it the input bearing on the old tranny that went? If you want to unload your new 97 for cheap in a few months, let me know!

well i wont be getting rid of the new 97 for awhile since i wont have the money till around next spring for an STi.
I forget exactly what it was but a pin came loose in the tranny and then shot parts of it out. Ill post again when i look up the acctual answer that was told to me. |

Ahh, that sucks. I know the 5-speed transmissions were prone to input bearing issues. That's the only thing that scares me about buying a 5-speed, but mostly because I just had to deal with the same thing with my sentra.
I would be interested in seeing some pictures of your 3.5 as well.

Copied and posted from maxima.org
Tilley and I tore it down quick today - that shaft that goes through the differential broke into 3 pieces - and of course the one that started working its way out of the differential housing got stuck against the tranny housing and broke through it in 2 places. Looking at the face of the of the break in the piece of pinion shaft, it suggests a minor flaw in the surface of the shaft that initiated a small crack, and through fatigue it the crack opened up until the torque of driving simply snapped it. From that point, the inertia of the spinning differential pushed it out of the diff and into the housing where it snapped in half again. These kinds of flaws are unavoidable without doing really expensive inspections at the factory, so it falls in the category of 's h i t happens'. Easier driving might have delayed the failure but not prevented it. |

Somehow I missed the picture of the big honkin hole in the side of your transmission! Definitely not an input bearing issue! :D
The new car does not look too bad. I like the exterior color better then the red it used to be.
