Instead of using the bolt if you have a tripod with a quick release plate just attach the string to that. Also use decent string or you'll find yourself pulling up hard to get tension and then snap the string.

Wow I might have to take my Cybershot to Lowes or Home Depot and find a screw to fit it. This would be much cheaper than a tripod LoL.

While its a cool idea, I wouldn't expect this to work as well as a tripod. Probably better for video guys that are trying to get more steady shots while panning.

it's not meant to replace the tripod totally. it just offers more stability when you don't have one, or don't have the ability to use one.

all tripod mounts are 1/4-20 size... (thats 1/4" by 20 threads per inch. )

Agreed, but video guys would benefit most from a homemade steadycam; http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~johnny/steadycam/
