Thinking of upgrading cameras...Nikon??

Was looing at these, and they are pretty expensive in my eyes, but in the camera world they may be very good deals.

What are the differences between the bodies (d200, d70, d70s, etc.)

Whats a good company for lenses

What are good prices (i dont wana pay 700 thinking its a good deal if its only worth 500)

Any other info apretiated

Also, can zoom and focus be adjusted on the barrel ofthe lens itself or is it done using buttons?? My camera uses the buttons and I find it clumsy, I would much prefer to be able to twist the controls on the lens since its quicker and i find it easier

if you are just starting out, look into a nikon d40 or the older d50. You can get a pretty good used setup with a d50 for around $500, maybe less.

The d70 is a glorified version of the d50. anything higher in number is going to have more advanced features, which you prob dont need if you are just starting out.
Focus can be adjusted manually on the barrel of the lens, or can be set to auto-focus where a half-press of the shutter button will focus the frame. Zoom is adjusted by turning the zoom ring on the barrel...there are no buttons used for zooming

Get on DP Review, there is ton's of info about each manufacture and cameras.
www.dpreview.com

Its all about your budget and what you plan on doing with it.
Do you plan on getting into photography, or are you looking for something just to take some snap shots.

There are some really good Point and Shoot cameras like the Canon S5 IS. But if your looking for something a little more serious, and function. Then you can get a DSLR. The 2 most popular brands is Canon and Nikon.

If your looking at Nikon, id suggest going with something like the D50 or better. Because the D40 uses a different non common type of lens. The D50 is about 3 years old, there are alot of other models you can check out.

If you checked out canon id recommend something liek a 350D, 400D, or the new 450D (WHICH IS AMAZING!). These are great starter DSLRs, with Tons of room to upgrade.

The only Nikon id get would be the D3, but thats way to expensive. So ill stick to my Canon.
Ive only been into photography more seriously for about 3 months now. It becomes addicting if you really get into it.

Ive been into photography for a while, been trying to get better. I have this camera now.

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2006_...uji_s5200.html

Its decent but it has a lot of things that I find hard to use...I see it as an entry level camera, I want something more serious. I hear good things about the Rebel XTi as well

For Nikon I'd look at used D70's and D50's. Look at classifieds sections of sites like nikonians.com for going rates. The D40 is a good camera too but I don't like that it needs AF-S lenses in order to autofocus. I may also sell my D70, and I think there is a D50 for sale on here if I remember right.
Canons are also great and have a great lens selection. I prefer the ergonomics of my Nikon, but as everyone says, go hold them each of them in your hand for a little while. A used 20D is a good buy and a great camera. Usually these can be found packaged with a lens. The new 450D is definitely cool for it's price (same sensor as the 40D except for some image processing?) but I still prefer used prosumer over new consumer. Either way, none of them will make your pictures better instantly and you'll need a learning curve and knowledge of what you're working with. Good luck.

I'll throw you a bone this time... http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond50/ Look under the section "Differences between D50 and D70/D70s"

I returned that in a 4 second google search of "D50 vs. D70". Everything you can ask at this stage has been answered endlessly on the internet, there is a ton of information.

Right, but I dont understan what all of that stuff means...if I can get the D50 and D70 for the same price which is better?? Like which one has better features so I can use it longer without having to upgrade again or are the differences between the 2 really not important?

Did you search google? It will be a much valuable use of your (and our) time than waiting for responses on here.

These came up from the same search and might be in more layman terms.

Also, don't rule out the Canons. Go into your local camera store, hold them, and talk to the person behind the counter.

I agree with Sis. Go to Allen's off of 413 or what ever it is or New York on Street Road. Hold a few cameras and see what feels better. I'm biased I guess but I'd go for a D50 or a D70. If you like Canon I think the XT and XTI are close to the two Nikons. I'm not sure since I shoot Nikon.

Some one once told me a long time ago, its not what your camera gear is made up of its how you use your current gear to its fullest. I posted up photos a while ago of some action shots at Formula D awhile ago that where up there with the pro's and there gear, and I was using a Nikon D50 and a cheap 70-300 crap lens.

If you've got the cash, get a used D200 or D300. The D300 is amazing. I used it every day. I also shoot with a D70s and it works out great as well. It's really personal preference on what you want to spend and what type of photography you want to do.

Lenses .. well, this more more of a personal deal. Nikkor (Nikon's brand) and Sigma are typically the two lenses I go for. I HIGHLY recommend joining up on Nikon Cafe at http://www.nikoncafe.com as you will learn everything you have questions about.

And I leave you with this to seriously consider: "The single most important component of a camera is the twelve inches behind it" -Ansel Adams

There has always been the Canon Vs Nikon battle. I have nothing again Nikon but i own a canon my self and i am extremely happy with it. The D300/D3 would be the only Nikon's id consider and thats because of there ISO/Noise. But canon will have something out soon with higher ISO.

Canon has always been the Bar setter.

all you need is a rebel xt and you'll be set, no need to get a brand new camera and spend more money than you have to. the quality is in the lenses anyway.

well since nobody else mentioned it, do NOT discount Sony DSLR cameras when you look for something new. everyone is always hung up on Nikon and Canon. not saying that they suck or anything, far from it, but just don't be so quick to jump on their bandwagon before you check out some other manufacturers.

with that being said, Sony has 5 DSLR cameras out now, as someone said already, read up on dpreview.com, lots of info there.
