maybe it's just cecil. i would probably be in the same boat with a bias-ply tire wheras i never ran on one. tried my friend's 6-speed ss once that had a very bad alignment and slicks/skinnies
made it to 2nd gear and just drove it the rest of the way down the track. scared the **** out of me i thought i was gonna roll it but i may have just been that car.
good luck with it and just like mikes93 your mph is up there, so the car can/WILL go faster.
