Maybe when it's one of your friends, or a fellow owner of the same car I can understand...
I mean, I know I'm not staring at every Subie I pass, looking to see if the driver is giving me the ol' "thumbs up". A Z owner? Well that's another story.
Not tryin' to bust your balls here, but it's neither disrespectful or rude of the person to not return the gesture if they don't know you or have anything in common with you which is obvious at a first glance.
Think of it this way: back where I'm from (New Hampshire...the STICKS), there are the Ford and Chevy waves - if you're driving around in a pickup, you're likely to eventually get a friendly wave from an owner of the same brand truck.
No way in hell I'd be caught dead driving in my Silverado, waving to a guy in a Dodge...
