Health issues such as noted above is a concern when buying a used helmet, but an even bigger concern is that you don't know the actual condition of the helmet.
Even if a helmet is dropped from say, 6 feet, it can create cracks in the helmet which you can't see by just looking at. The stress cracks means that if you are to get in an accident, that helmet isn't going to do what it is supposed to (protect your noggin). They actually have little sensors that you can buy, and if you drop the helmet (even from as little as 2 feet on to concrete!!!) it can show whether or not the helmet should be replaced based upon the impact. Also, if you ever get in an accident while wearing a helmet and the helmet impacts the ground (whether it be riding dirt bikes on a dirt track, or on asphalt), throw it out or put it on the stand. It's no longer any good, as they are only rated for the initial impact.
