If they ran off, tore something up, etc, it was a smack on the ass. As they grew up they were the best dogs ever, never got nasty with anybody and were very friendly.
Just don't take it to the extent that you make them nasty dogs or that you could get in trouble for beating them. Dogs like that just look sad all the time and snap at anytime.

Yah cause beating him will totally make the dog understand. People that beat there dogs don't care to take the time to actually train them. A dog wants to be obedient and is happier when they are. It is not easy but some form of correction is needed. Sandy is correct so you could use a choke collar when used properly will correct the dog not injure the dog. It is going to take time and constant effort...
My dog used to bit when i would get out of bed. He would run under my bed and at night SNEAK ATTACK. It took me months of keeping one eye open and every time he would inch off his bed I would pick him up and say "Marley Stay" and after a while he did. NO more biting. I am not comparing but just giving you a quick example. A dog will always test his owner. If you stay consistent and not yell and scream or beat the dog they will begin to obey. Good luck
