Well, actually, a lot of people zone the house like that for a very good reason.

You spend a vast amount of time in the bedroom, and at night, when everyone is sleeping, there is no sense to (in the summer) cool the entire house. You just want to be cool in your bedroom. In the day time, when you don't use the bedrooms, why cool them? Or, in the winter, you want to keep heat lower in unused parts of the house, while in the bedroom, you may want the temp. a couple of degree's warming. During the daytime, you don't go in the bedroom so why spend money to heat them? No sense in heating parts of the house that aren't used at the time.

I can't help with the price though, just throwing out my two cents (as well as HVAC technicians that I work with) of how it's not such a bad thing. It's actually a very wise way of zoning.
