If you pull a gun on a person to get them to back off, you have committed a felony by brandishing a weapon. If you shoot that person, you must be able to prove that it was in self defense, and escape was not a safe option. Even if you are found criminally innocent, you may still face a civil suit from the family of the 'poor innocent victim who never did nobody no wrong'.
