whats said above should be really helpful. if you havent yet, read your manual. twice. there is no point in having a great tool if you aren't even aware of the things it is capable of.
you're on the right track though, getting out there and shooting is the way to improve. see what you've done that you like and see what you think could use some improvement.
if you were using a tripod then how stable is it? also consider using the self timer to take tripod photos so you dont shake the camera just by pressing the shutter release.
