I have a Springfield XD 9mm. I really prefer the feel of the springfields over the glocks I have shot. If this is your first pistol, buy something used. Get used to it, and figure out what you don't like about it. Once you have a better idea of what you do and don't like, you can pick up a second pistol. Getting a 9mm means cheaper rounds, which means it will cost you less to shoot a few hundred rounds each month.
If you are considering carrying, definatly take as many safety courses as you can, and make sure you are proficient with the firearm. Also, evaluate why you want to carry the weapon.
