grimm, im trying to spend no more than 500, and even that is a stretch for me. im fully aware of the irony in the fact that i have spent more than 15 grand on my camera equipment and now im bitching about spending a grand on a good monitor. its a no brainer. but in all that i have been reading, for half the money, i can get a good monitor that wont break the bank but will still do what i require. as for the asus, i have read a few reviews on it and it seems that the familiar complaint about it is the corner bleeding. i have learned to take reviews online with a grain of salt, but when it seems that a similar complaint is noted in several places, its cause for concern. so far it seems that the dell ultrasharp monitors are leading the pack among 500 and under displays. it seems that there was a bad batch of them for years but there are revisions that are known to be good. there is also an asus that i am looking at but i cannot remember the model number off the top of my head. ill have a look at the article you posted. thanks for the info.

zillon, the i1 seems to be a pretty good unit. generally any gear i get from this guy is top notch, especially since has been a professional photographer who has shot all over the world since the 70s and is now an adviser for an industrial printing company that specializes in photo printers. the i1 kit he gave me also has a chart in it to calibrate printers as well but im not getting into that since i dont print anything myself. and yes, when the weather gets nicer, we shall shoot.
