If they don't want you to get it tinted, and they own it, don't tint it.
Your best bet is to lay out the advantages of getting it tinted, and let them decide. Tell Mom/Dad that it's not illegal- it keeps mileage down (a good thing especially right now) -- etc.
But its not necessary. Invest in good sunglasses.

Well, the first part isn't true...
but the second part on gas mileage, it will help to keep mpg down because in-car temps would be reduced, thus reducing a/c usage, and freeing up the engine from the drag, thus being more efficeint.
Unfortuneately for me, I don't have a/c. BUT, I have noticed one thing: My car is definitely cooler inside than other dark cars without tint when both are parked in direct sunlight.
*edit* My seatbelt clips don't burn me either, and neither do half of the black components in my car. I don't have a sunshade on my window, but my steering wheel isn't 900 degrees and I can actually touch it and drive on the hottest of days.
