You don't necessarily need to use strobes. If you want to practice on portraits, you might want to just work on it with natural lighting and then move towards strobing. Large windows work well for back-lit images.

I'm not a portrait photographer, so these were the first portraits I've taken in 5 years. I kept it simple and didn't use any strobes other than a ring flash for a few images. The two posted above are with natural lighting.
