The vandal is a dick, no two ways about it. However, the guys who did the beating are scum. It's simple really. Anyone with half a brain and an ounce of self control would have stood back and laughed a bit while dialing the phone to call the police and having their friend snap some pictures of the guy who did it and the plate number of the car he was driving.
