Haha, I'm not even in the market for this car -- I just understand that it's going to be successful.
Here's what is essentially a modern Miata, and people are wondering why I think it's going to sell well. If you compare a Miata to a Mustang, or Civic, or whatever, it'll look pretty bad too -- but that's not the point. Not every car is a dick waving contest of numbers to see who is the fastest.
If it was, the Camaro wouldn't sell -- and yet it has outsold the new Mustang, despite the new Mustang being better in literally every way.
The experience is what is important to most people, and if C&D, MT, Autocar, and Inside Line are all spouting off how this car is a great driving experience and "the best sports car in 10 years" then it probably is pretty fun to drive.
I keep hearing calls for a turbo, or for a lighter car, or whatever. It's all about economics. All of those things would push the price up, and right now, sports cars really aren't selling that well period -- unless they do something else impressive as well (see: fuel mileage).
I mean, really. You know why they didn't want to make a 370z competitor (basically another Supra)? Because yet another impractical sports car in the 30-40k bracket wouldn't sell.
I know that's a hard pill to swallow, but don't take my word for it. Just look at the market.
