You may want to try running a system restore to a previous date before the issue occurred. If it happened too far back then you may have have to run a repair reinstall of Windows Xp to repair that issue. Just make sure you don't do a full clean install or you will loose your data. I would certainly backup your important files just to be safe.

Also can try running sfc /scannow in the run command but you need the Windows XP disk that came with your computer.

Also can try running a chkdsk on the hard drive but not too sure if that will correct this issue.

Sounds like Windows XP could have became corrupted and needs to be repaired.
