You don't need a built motor for a 50-trim. You really don't need a built motor for any setup unless you plan on making alot of power, Safely and getting the most out of the mods. A built motor is always a good idea though if you plan to push the cars limits.
For instance, I've already gone 10.60's in a 2g with a completly stock 6-bolt motor, With a bolt on hx35/40 hybrid, and all the boltons. The car also had 272' cams with stock valvetrain, And no problems. This was almost 8 years ago now though...
