My final thought, is still that you overall have an idea. What i would recommend is, and this is something i do with alllll my series that i shoot, is when you think you are done, set up a presentation -- a slideshow in lightroom or something, and watch it the next day or whatever. whether you are staring at this photograph and manipulating it for minutes, or hours, you will become 'desensitized' to it. preview your photos a day later, or hours later, whatever. something to give your mind to adjust back to reality and whatnot. You will notice these things, like when things are overworked and will be able to correct them.
Also, im not familiar with your workflow, but keep in mind that every photo is different. No 2 photos will have the same exact settings and produce equally effective results. I know a few fellow students that will produce a spot-on curves outline for a photo, and apply it a batch of photos. Sometimes its OK, other times its like

.
A few things that i try to do myself. make another attempt at some photos and take our criticism. im interested in seeing the progression!
