as being safer, I was referring to advanced in technology (ie bulletproof material, better training, radar/sonar, weapons that dont misfire/detonate, as well as advances in medicine and health for injured soldiers, etc). Statistics have shown moden war is much safer than wars of previous time. when was the last time your heard of 100,000 people dying during a single battle beides gettysburg?

I dont think any of us could even fathom how different war was in the past. Thats why I love movies like "Saving Private Ryan". I think it's as close as we can get to seeing what it's like and It's probably alot worse than we think.
I shot a friends Enfield MK1 at a range a few years ago and it kicks as hard (if not harder) than a shotgun. And the noise it made was beastly. I couldn't imagine hearing hundreds of them shooting.....
