When my grandfather passed, he was on his death bed at my grandmoms house and I luckily went down the weekend before he passed. He was awake and knew what was going on. Each family member was called in to say goodbye. It was nice to say "I love you grandpap" and give him a hug and kiss on the forehead before he passed.
It's all up to you if you ask me. I was very close to him so I had to do it for myself. You wouldn't be a bad person not to go, but if you can I would.
