Just out of curiosity, how exactly does the paint correction work? Can it be detrimental if done too often, and how long does it's effects last?

lol at smilie, great question actually. Depending on what level paint correction was performed, the quality of the paint itself, the quality of the work itself and what products were used, as well as a few other factors, really warrants how often it can be done and how long it will last.
For example, this car, the paint really needed the work and more abrasive compounds were used and much more buffer time was needed. This can and will compromise a single layer of the clear coat - compound, depending on the abrasiveness, typically works into/past the top layer of the clear - so you're already slimming how much more can be done. The follow up polishing works WITH the new layer of clear, smooths it out/etc and then you're basically fresh. If it just needed a light polishing, that can be done "often" but if done right, it won't need it.
A job like this, if properly maintained CAN last...years, but that goes for the polishing/correction part itself. It's the protection that is short lived, typically 4-6 months before you will need to seal it again under normal circumstances. Wax every 2-3 months under the same circumstances. When properly done, that will extend the life of the detail itself further and further, but when not properly done the job loses value quickly.
I'll stop there so this doesn't become a book of a response, I hope that was clear/understandable, it HAS been a long week haha
