Again, I don't understand how the noise happens once per wheel rotation so regularly, makes me believe something is wrong with the axle or diff but how the noise appears and disappears under different ammounts of load on the suspension put me into a total confusion.

sounds like a bad cv. You have a clunk every rotation which means it is either trans, driveshaft, diff, or cv/axles. If its from the rear, its not the trans. If it varies with suspension load, likely then the axles--as the angle of the axle changes so does the "clunk". Have you checked the boots to make sure they're not torn? Even if they are intact you could have busted it launching at the strip. Good luck...
