They go in one way. Setting the timing to get it relatively close to run ok isn't hard. Just keep turning the distributor until you get a smooth idle. That will be enough to drive it around and or get to a shop.
Most cases just set the distributor in the middle and work from there; either advance(towards firewall) or retard(towards radiator).
