every department has their own pursuit policies, it depends on the situation and that policy how a pursuit is handled. The person you chasing might be running because they don't have a license or they might have just murdered 5 people you never know. Some departments may have the officer cut the pursuit at a certain speed but again it differs. Sometimes its just obviously pointless to attempt a pursuit a Crown Vic vs a Hayabusa isn't much of a match up not to mention the odds of a motorcycle chase ending in death are multiplied exponentially in comparison to a car chase.
