Maybe you are just bad at video games?
I've been playing Midnight Club LA for several months and use the in car view only. I haven't ever had any trouble. Same with Gran Turismo 5.

Strange...my PS3 plays DIVX .avi files no problem. You probably experienced this on one of the older firmwares, because DIVX support was added about a month ago.
