$400 = car in the crapper? Fix it, $400 isn't bad. $4000 = much worse. Not like you can sell your car and get one of equal cost that will be more reliable... that's why it's worth as much as it is in the first place.
Sorry about the layoff.. you'll be alright. I've got a roommate on unemployment who's doing fine.
