You were having a problem getting "cut" earlier, sounds suspiciously like detonation. Detonation is not good. Get a wideband and something to control your fuel.

If being cautious to the tune of $200 bucks or so for a wideband set up isn't worth it... maybe a $5000 engine rebuild will worth it to him.....
