ADVANCED SERVICE INFORMATION

Subject:
Service Alert: Concerns With Aftermarket Fuses in GM Vehicles

Models:
2008 and Prior GM Passenger Cars and Light Duty Trucks (including Saturn)
2008 and Prior HUMMER H2, H3
2008 and Prior Saab 9-7X

Concerns with Harbor Freight Tools "Storehouse" Branded Blade Type Fuses

General Motors has become aware of a fuse recall by Harbor Freight Tools/Storehouse for a variety of aftermarket fuses. In two cases, these fuses have not provided protection for the wiring system of the vehicles they were customer installed in.

Upon testing the 15 amp version, it was found that the fuse still would not "open" when shorted directly across the battery terminals.

How to Identify These Fuses

Packed in a 120 piece set, the fuse has a translucent, hard plastic, blue body with the amperage stamped into the top. There are no white painted numbers on the fuse to indicate amperage. There are no identifying marks on the fuse to tell who is making it. The fuses are known to be distributed by Harbor Freight Tools but there may be other marketers, and packaging of this style of fuse. It would be prudent to replace these fuses if found in a customers vehicle. Likewise, if wiring overheating is found you should check the fuse panel for the presence of this style of fuse.

All GM dealers should use genuine GM fuses on the vehicles they service. You should also encourage the use of GM fuses to your customers to assure they are getting the required electrical system protection. GM has no knowledge of any concerns with other aftermarket fuses. If additional information becomes available, this bulletin will be updated.

thanks for the heads up.. Im usually pretty cautious about buying things from harbour freight. I feel alot of their stuff is jenky..

Honduh 02-19-2010 02:08 PM

Yup, pretty much why I don't buy anything from harbour freight.

importpower99 02-19-2010 03:16 PM

Is there a reason why everybody is spelling "Harbor" wrong?

xtnct 02-19-2010 03:31 PM

Uhh, that's bad. HF=made in China for very very cheap. You really have to watch what you get there.

JSpecV03 02-19-2010 04:43 PM

ive been on the fence for a long while now about stuff from harbour freight. this makes me lean farther away from them now.
so thank you for the informative post.

jpalamar 02-19-2010 05:22 PM

They haven't sold good stuff in a long time. I can't belive people still buy their crap and they haven't gone under yet.

DPancoast 02-19-2010 05:57 PM

I never had the desire to buy from them... this takes the cake

KEVN257 02-19-2010 06:10 PM

you just gotta but stuff thats not vital. like cheap ass gloves and stuff like that nature. not parts that matter if they malfunction

DriftCrash 02-19-2010 07:42 PM

^^^ Agreed, I buy tools from HF if i need to use them once or twice if it lasts longer then its just a bounes lol then they become the "junkyard" tools so if i forget em its no big deal.

HARBOR FREIGHT. right? not harrbourr?

420sx 02-19-2010 09:45 PM

I got a 4 1/2" angle grinder there for $16 and it lasted over a year.

The best part was when the lady asked me if i wanted the warranty for it or whatever. Lady, its $16. When it breaks, I'll come get a new one.

I could buy 6 of em before ive spent what a Dewalt costs.

Not that Chicago Electric is anywhere near comparable to Dewalt. But for $16.. even if its a dangerous product I'd buy it, haha.

i love this place, cheap tools....never bothered me. i pretty much own mostly snap-on, mac, sk and blue point tools. but i find myself using more of the hf impact sockets, 3" disc cutter, angle grinder, and impact chisel more than my better brand equilavents.

hell i bought one of the $40. remote control airplanes and i lost it five minutes after i put it together. lol the f'n thing flew away haa haa.....

Scapegoat 02-20-2010 05:50 PM

had a harbor freight socket wrench twist apart in when trying to loosen a bolt on the truck i had. that'll be the last time i purchase anything from there. I was looking at engine stands and hoists a while ago too... glad i never bit the bullet and purchased one from them.

BigWhiteTodd 02-20-2010 06:20 PM

hm maybe thats what happened to or comp car at school plug blower motor fuse in and almost went up in flames it was awesome lol

sponsored1 02-20-2010 06:33 PM

A couple years ago i purchased that same fuse kit from harbor freight. A couple weeks later i got a letter from them in the mail saying not to use the fuse kit and they would reimburse me for it. So harbor freight either knew about this problem years ago, or they thought they fixed it and are having the same problem again.

SovXietday 02-20-2010 07:57 PM

15amp fuse that doesn't break huh, that's pretty f'in sweet!

Rotary Knight 02-21-2010 01:28 AM

I love harbor freight.
All my tools that I buy from there are still in working order :)
My "earthquake" impact is still good after 3 years of abuse and usage.
650ft tq is awesome for under 100 haha
