Lapse in insurance on a registered vehicle...?

My buddy let his insurance run out on his truck. He didnt turn his tags in, and like a moron, kept driving. Well it finally caught up with him, and he got nailed for no insurance and no inspection. Now hes stopped driving and is trying to get his vehicle legal again.

For some reason, I'm thinking that if you have a registered vehicle have a lapse in insurance and you dont turn the plates in, you cant get it insured for three months or something like that? Is this true? If so, what does he need to do to get that clock started? Does he have to turn his tags in, and then three months from then he can get them back? Or does he need to send in his lisence?

Thanks for any input. :)

get the truck legal, put insurance on it, get it registered, get it inspected, drive safe

no lines no waiting

I was under the impression that he can't get it insured. Because he had a registered vehicle on the road without insurance, Im told that the insurance company takes this as meaning that he has been driving it without insurance. Because of that, they wont start a new policy with him without a waiting period because he could have been in an accident during those uninsured months, and they dont want to be responsible for covering that claim.

Or am i completely wrong?

I'd recommend going to the source on this one... PennDOT and your insurance company. Get the info direct and go from there.
I do know that a lapse in insurance can lead to a 3 month suspension of registration in PA though. If you want all the info though, seriously, go directly to the source.

You were right, a lapse in insurance results in a 3 month suspension of registration.

Unfortunately for my buddy, his truck is his way of making money, so not driving for 3 months isnt an option. We're going to transfer the truck into my name, register it, and insure it under my name with my buddy as a secondary driver. Loopholes ftw. :)
