HELP: 06 wrx feels like only two cyl firing

I was on my way back to work a few minutes ago, and my car backfired and started to feel like only two cyl's are firing. Any help is appreciated.

oil...check
vac lines...check

RyanG 09-12-2009 12:22 PM

Cel???

EACH IT 09-12-2009 12:29 PM

I understand there is one pack per cyl, but is there a way to check they are all firing? I can easily check the rest of my vac lines, but if I can't get it home, to my laptop and tools....I'm possibly screwed...lol

RyanG 09-12-2009 01:33 PM

like I said before .... DO YOU HAVE A CEL?

EACH IT 09-12-2009 01:58 PM

the car is not showing any codes currently.
I'll check the air filter & maf soon.
I am checking with a friend with a shop close by, maybe I can drive it there to check it out. 02 sensor on exhaust still attatched. still not certain...

correct me if I'm wrong but if a cel or cels were not functioning correctly, it would show a code?
no codes are showing still. it starts up, will not run between 1000 and 3000 rpms, sputters and spits flames in gear. stalls often, to get it home i had to start it...move it. stop at a red light, I had to shut it down everytime, then re-start it and get to the next light.
all hoses for air are connected, it feels more like a fuel issue, or injector issue.
going to have to take it somewhere monday i guess.

Greg, CEL = Check Engine Light....they shouldn't have to function at all haha

You may have fouled some plugs??

I meant Pak not cel, no check lights came on until after I unplugged my maf, and then even that light went out after 3 cycles of ignition on and off and the car not recognizing anything wrong.
Probably just gonna put it back together tonight and get it to a shop monday am.

so the whole problem was......My stock fuel pump. it was coming apart in two pieces, and since I was below a quarter tank, not keeping the correct psi in the pump / or through the pump. took it out tightened up the two pieces, and went straight to a gas station. seems to be fine for now, I'll be on the market this week or next for a better one this week I guess.
thanks chris for coming by and helping out.

I would agree with Ray about checking your intercooler. Your symptoms sound quite similar to those of a busted intercooler or loose piping.

BustedUjoint 09-14-2009 01:14 PM

Glad you were able to figure it out. And that it wasn't anything crazy.

EACH IT 09-14-2009 05:25 PM

everyone I talked to about it said air, vac, or something of the sort. It was a weird fluke event with that fuel pump. I'll be buying a new one soon though.

Supraru 09-23-2009 07:57 PM

Glad your problems fixed. Usually I'd check for bad plugs first though even though you don't have a check engine light. Gotta start with the basics sometimes. Keep us updated if you have any farther issues.

EACH IT 09-23-2009 08:21 PM

yup, I am going to replace the fuel pump tomorrow. Picked up a wal255 yesterday. I'll put the old one in my 'slightly' broken box. strange how the tabs on my stock pump weren't holding in place.
I'll post some pics tomorrow so people know what I mean.
