d16hatch's '98 Prelude (skip to last post)

ok so here it is... the rebuild...

piror info click here

so the rebuild is happening in a very secret location :)

today i finally got the car started, i have the front end off the car and its sitting on steelies, i'll have to get about 5-6 lug studs replaced that were stripped but thats all coming. I wish i was going to have this weekend to work on it but my next two weekends are spent at weddings, in michigan.

so as for right now, no new pictures, i'll get them asap when i get back.

the car is running, just working on getting a radiator into the car. i picked up a brand new radiator from an accord for free so i'm going to try to fit that in, its a full size (not a half like the normal eg's). since i dont have ac or ps, i figured why not?

so, here is to the rebuild, then sale. thanks for looking.

I know you had some trouble getting the engine to start at first, what was the problem?

d16hatch's 92 Civic Hatch: Found a Garage, commence rebuild!

alright so my friends dad (long time friend of the family) has agreed to let me use his garage for a month to try and get my civic back to the best possible shape.

I quickly washed it before loading it into the garage and snapped some pictures. It already made me so much happier than seeing it in the woods.

*starts buying lots of parts*

and for the pics

so i found the source of the awful smell... sitting in the woods without a hood and having rain leak in through the holes in the firewall gives me water... not a friend. I ripped out the seats and carpet so i'm down to metal on the floors. cleaned it out well. I'll take some pics when I can of what i'm doing.

the new plan is to build it and give it to my little sister to drive while she is saving for a car, so i'm installing a/c on it for her, found a complete kit for 125. since she is in nc its needed. and it will be a nice thing to have.

Alright, so here is to reviving a really old thread.

The civic has been gone for a while, finally got sick of it and sold the whole thing (during my senior year of mechanical engineering I had no time to work on it).

Since then I've owned a '97 Impreza Outback sport, then I bought a '97 Prelude. The '97 impreza was sold and back in december I hit a curb sideways at about 50mph in the prelude and bent the frame. So I bought a '98 Prelude with a bad motor. My original plan was to swap my motor in, but when I sent the bad motor down to my brother (he works at a shop) to mess around with, he found it was cheap enough to just rebuild that motor. The kid looks like he broke the timing belt, installed a new one totally wrong, and tried to start it. The timing was way off and the valves were bent. Well the motor is done now.

So this weekend is install weekend. The only problem is my brother lives with my parents down in NC. So my dad left at like 4 am this morning with a trailer and is coming to pick me and my shell up and we will drive back down to NC this afternoon. Tomorrow we will install the motor and I will drive back up here to NJ on Sunday so I can still get to work on Monday. I am so excited to have a prelude again. Although I have been enjoying driving a '97 Tacoma 4x4 this winter.

I'll get some pictures up as soon as I can and track the progress this weekend. Hopefully I won't have to buy a flight Sunday night haha.

Hell yeah, well its a little over due.... but welcome to the prelude game!

That dark gray lude from the video is the one that has all the frame damage correct? Its a shame if so, that thing was pretty damn clean & low mileage. Looks really good with 6 wheels on it.

check out my build if you want. ill be keeping an eye on yours, good luck with this weekends happenings.

Thanks! I have always loved the 5th gen ludes. (wish i had the SH like yours haha). You are correct about that one being the one with frame damage. I loved that car. oh well.

This weekend went perfect, The motor is spotless and I scrubbed the engine bay as well. The body has like 206k on it, but the motor is basically new now, all major maintenance is done and the next thing i'll have to do is the timing belt in 90k miles haha. well besides the oil of course.

the only issue I have is the power steering pump, sucker is really noisy. I'm going to flush all the fluid out and put in new honda stuff to see if it quiets it down, if not i'll rip the one off my wrecked lude and stick that on there.

other than that we are good to go. of course I forgot to bring a camera to the shop on sat so all i have are some phone pictures.

Some of the car was repainted a gray color, but the actual car color is artic mist. I might strip it down and repaint it artic mist eventually. I would love to have a dark gray metallic color but I don't have the money to get everything painted (engine bay, door jams, etc) so i'll just go back to the stock color of what the engine bay and door jams and all already are.

d16hatch 03-11-2011 04:40 PM

Current Plans:
  • Replace Power Steering Pump (it grinds terribly)... do that tomorrow
  • Get 2 mazda 6 rims to replace the two i broke, and put them on this car... found a set of 4 on craigslist really cheap so maybe i'll pick them up tomorrow too.
  • Get a mugen (or replica) front bumper and nice lip kit
  • Retrofit black projector housing headlights
  • Fix paint
  • Strut bars, lower tie bars, other frame stiffening
