Storm Clouds + Cobra + Rainbow + Pedobear = a whole bunch of HDR's

As I was leaving work one day last month I noticed that there were some really mean storm clouds rolling in, I rushed home to grab my camera gear and found the closest semi acceptable location to shoot a bunch of pictures which happened to be Pennsauken High School. Unfortunately my car was filthy but the clouds were so dam mean that the shots came out decent. The sky opened up and dumped a bunch of rain in my face at one point but then the two rainbows formed which made it well worth it :)

*makes me want to learn to do nice hdr's such as this*

It was a long frustrating road trying to figure out how to make HDR's look natural and not like cartoons or video games, although a big part of the learning curve was just doing it over and over and over again.

those shots of the car woulda been way better without the hdr. the lacrosse net is good.

#3 is my favorite. Its like the heavens shining down upon your vehicle.

the car does look very rendered in hdr. The rest of the shots I like though, especially the ones w/ sky in it.

Unfortunately not, there was way too much contrast for the camera to handle in a single exposure so if the sky was properly exposed the car was a big black blob or the car was properly exposed and the sky was completely blown out. That's the problem with shooting a black car, you're basically shooting a big rounded mirror and in this case it was even worse because it was a dirty mirror :( The HDR process is the only thing that saved the pictures of the car and then it brought some extra depth to the other shots so I kept processing them with it. I also tried doing composites on a bunch of these but they just didn't have the punch that the HDR's did because of the subtle details that were still lost to each shot's narrow contrast range.

Get one man, they're CHEAP right now because no-one wants "gas hog" v8's, little do they know that this car gets over 28 mpg if I drive like a respectable member of society :)

I paid $5,500 for mine and all it needed was a new top and a good detail, then I found my father one for $8k that was as clean as the day it came off the showroom floor.

expose for sky, take shot. expose for car, take shot. merge. no hdr and you have a properly exposed photo. hdr on a black, especially a dirty black car just doesnt work.

I tried doing composites on a bunch of these but they just didn't have the punch that the HDR's did because of the subtle details that were still lost to each shot's narrow contrast range. Also, the sky exposure was so much brighter that getting the transitional areas (buildings in the background and the street surface) to look correct was very difficult.
