Catalytic Converter recycling?

Anyone know of a place where you can get money for old cat's? Ive been told its possible you can get some decent money for them since they contain some precious metals.

Yep, platinum is the main metal that gets you the $$$$

Nope, it's rhodium, which i think is around 5x more expensive than platinum.

Edit: BTW, I think most junkyards will pay out around 75-100$ for cats.

Ok, whatever it is haha I want to get some money for it. I just took 3 cats off my car, figure I can make more money recycling them than actually selling the parts to other forum members.

Hmm I thought it was the older cars who's cats were worth more.

You have to make sure the catalist is non magnetic. If it is...the cat is worth like 20$ at best.

If the catalist is NOT magnetic....you should get NO LESS than 80$ for a cat off any import car

yup. cats from newer cars aren't worth anything, but a mid 90's import car is as good as gold.

try ebay. you can sell on ebay if you are selling in the Business & Industrial > Manufacturing & Metalworking > Metals & Alloys section. if you include the EPA disclaimer that it is for scrap only, they will not take it down. if you put the auction anywhere else, ebay will remove it right away.

i put my 3 cats up for auction for 5 days and within the first day there were 5 bids each, all the same guy. i got $125 for each '95/'96 GSR cat and $100 for an EG civic cat. $350 for 3 small chunks of seemingly worthless scrap haha.

make sure you not only take pics of the outside, but of the guts too. people want to see that they're intact and not buying a hollow worthless shell.

Mindspin311 04-22-2009 11:56 AM

So how can I find out if they're worth anything? They're off my 05 Legacy..
