Quitting Smoking?

Tried to find a similar thread to no avail.

Alright, so I first tried smoking in 7th grade because my friend stole a pack of Korean cigarettes from her dad and we were bored. So we hid in my basement and tried one. I picked up smoking for a while in 8th grade, but it didn't last long. Then my boyfriend in 10th grade was a smoker, I tried it one day, and haven't been able to really stop since. I quit once for 2 months, and then I quit again this summer for 6 weeks. After a week of upset stomachs and migraines, it's no longer physical but rather mental. I use cigarettes as a time waster.

for instance..
I wake up, I smoke.
I take the dogs out, I smoke.
I take the dogs for a walk, I smoke.
I'm in my car, I smoke.
I have to sit around and wait, I smoke.
I get stressed, I smoke.
I eat, I smoke.

So it's not so much that I can't do it, it's just that I almost doesn't WANT to quit because smoking fills the blanks in my days, haha.

ANYWAY, I'm going to try and quit, again, because it's better for my health and stuffs..

Has anyone else ever successfully quit, or is in the process of quitting? How long have you been smoke free since? Did you go cold turkey, use gum/patches, use those nifty fake cigarette quitting thingies, go to a hypnotist, go on meds? AND, anyone else want to try and quit with me this winter?

Here's a good idea-
everyone who wants to quit to put $100 bucks into a pool. the person who stops smoking the longest wins it.

I had two friends who waged $1000 bucks and the winner of that also happened to stop smoking forever.

i smoke... i have always been on and off... just do something else when you would normally smoke... anything... eat, chew gum, make a phone call, the random stuff to take your mind off of it...

a guy i used to work for used to smoke a lot. he tried to quit, and i think it worked, was to chew gum and smoke a cigarette at the same time. he said that the gum eventually tasted like the smoke, and it forced him not to smoke any more.

real cool, hope you die. how about not smelling like **** all the time, that would be a good reason to quit.

I was doing a pack a day, and about 6 months ago I decided to quit cold turkey.. just put my mind to it, and did it.

and about 3 months ago, I made a conscious decision to smoke only when I drink because I thought it was more reasonable and, for me, the good outweighs the bad of just smoking when I drink..

but since I've quit smoking sober 6 months ago, I haven't had a single cigarette if I don't have a beer in my hand..

rather than 7-10 packs a week, I only go through less than one pack a week..

I agree with the above when they say find something else to "fill the blanks". My uncle used to eat Jelly Beans. My friend said you just have to keep your mind and smoking hand busy. It's a habit for a reason so make a new habit that isn't smoking lol.

It's hard from what I've seen. Just tell your friends you are tryin to quit too. Hopefully they will help you keep your mind off of it. Good luck Julz. I have massive respect for people that actually TRY to quit.

I wish, lol. I think 90% of my friends smoke.

Dude, 99% of the shyt you say on here is just putting people down and flat out talking shyt. You must be a huge douchebag, or have a complex of some sort. What the **** makes you think you're so special??

Anyways Julz...good luck. I quit cold turkey also. Been about 2 years now. It saves a lot of money and i feel 100x better.

why would you want to smoke? why dont you stop buying something that kills you? its retarded. go work out or exercise or go for a nature walk instead of killing yourself.

i mean if youre going to smoke, smoke rocks

ASIAN JUL 12-02-2008 12:55 PM

I know smoking's bad for me, hence why I'm quitting?

pearl 12-02-2008 12:57 PM

so do it, stop buying them, stop bumming them, etc

its much easier then you think. be your own person!

I know not buying cigarettes would obviously lead to me no longer smoking, the point is that it isn't that difficult to drive 45 seconds to Wawa and get cigarettes and I was wondering if other people who have quit/are quitting have used/are using gum, patches, etc. or found something else to keep them busy/preoccupied. Obviously the knowledge itself isn't enough, as bad as that sounds, and I wasn't asking for someone to reiterate how unhealthy smoking is.

if you want something bad enough, it shouldn't be a problem..

it seems as though your want to quit is weaker than your want to smoke..

I love people that drive for 45 seconds. That's like me driving to my neighbor's house to ask for some sugar.

ASIAN JUL 12-02-2008 01:10 PM

Ok, if you'd prefer, it's not that hard to take the 10 minute walk to get cigarettes? lol

pearl 12-02-2008 01:11 PM

idk, the facts, along with what you can see it does to people would be enough to me. most of those truth commercials are pretty damn good. you need a substitute! you eed to not hang around with other people that smoke, and just like the post above me, if you want to quit, you will.

lol

james_ls 12-02-2008 01:11 PM

Just try it straight up.

Get a boyfriend or a **** buddy...something to "fulfill" the "blank" times in your day.

ASIAN JUL 12-02-2008 01:18 PM

Hm. My friend gave me an idea since I wanna look into buying a car. He said to get a big jar, and instead of spending $5 a day on cigarettes, to put the $5 into the jar and it will be a daily reminder. And then when I want to smoke, look at cars I wanna buy. Lol.

I quit smoking for 6 weeks so I could afford the 2 grand+ I needed to buy my dog.. Maybe I can do it again...
